GRANDE COLONIAL HOTEL LA JOLLA

The Grande Colonial Hotel Adds 18 New Suites with Completion of Two Historic Restoration Projects

The 75-room Grande Colonial Hotel, located on Prospect Street in La Jolla, is nearing completion of a $3.5 million historical restoration project of The Little Hotel by the Sea and the Garden Terraces, adding 18 new suites to the hotel’s existing 75-room inventory. The restoration project began in September ’05 and is expected to be completed early 2007.

The eight-suite Little Hotel by the Sea and the ten-suite Garden Terraces have both operated as residential apartment complexes for the past 30 years. Upon completion, they will maintain their individual names but will become part of The Grande Colonial Hotel, La Jolla’s oldest hotel which opened in 1913.

Interior design of both buildings will reflect comfortable residential style. Each of the 18 suites will have full kitchens or kitchenettes. The project will also include replacement of all electrical and plumbing systems, the conversion of existing fireplaces to sealed direct-vent fireplaces, and the installation of new heating / air conditioning systems.

Two significant elements of the Little Hotel by the Sea project include the restoration of the building’s rooftop “loft” and deck, and restoration of the 1929 Baker & Sons elevator. The rooftop area will be used as a guest library and sitting room, as well as an outdoor terrace and dining area providing panoramic views of the Pacific. The Baker & Sons elevator, which will be restored to full operation, is a four-passenger, solid-mahogany elevator housed in a steel tower erected from solid rock beneath the hotel. Soon after it was added to the hotel back in 1929, it became recognized as the “The Smallest Hotel in the World with an Elevator”.

The restoration project has been reviewed and approved by the San Diego Historical Society Design Assistance Subcommittee, and will closely follow the Department of Interior Guidelines for Historic Restoration.
